Weitzer Wood Solution
Wintersport 2030

Weitzer Wood Solutions Austria was commissioned to develop and design a sustainable and new product with wood as a material for the year 2030. The entire ski boot is a mixed concept of a touring ski boot with a removable grip-walk sole made of Taraxa-Gum and an ordinary all-round  downhill ski boot. The colors of the ski boot were selected on the basis of natural products and colors that are common in cold seasons. Also there will be a model available in the CI - color of Weitzer.

Why | Problem?
Austria is known as the worldwide skiing destination and many global brands in the winter sports sector, such as Atomic or Fischer have their manufactures in the alpine country. However, as beautiful as skiing may seem, it also entails significant dangers for the environment and nature. On the one hand, the production of ski equipment requires numerous raw materials that are not sustainable, and on the other hand, users often do not act sustainably either, because powder skiing off the slopes is getting more popular.

How | Solution?
Therefore, a sustainable design of an equipment was chosen as the approach for this project. Furthermore, the Megatrend Map of the Future Institute was researched in order to select and rethink a promising product. After extensive analysis of the wood bending industry, the concept of a sustainable, new and modern ski boot with bent wood components in the shell and shaft area, was developed. To stabilized the bended wood shell and shaft area a aluminum plate was fixed at the boot back to balance the forces. In addition, the ski boot has been designed with sustainable materials such as Taraxa Gum as a grip sole or paddings made out of wood shavings.

What | Learning?
Firstly, for such a hightech product, one semester is very tight in terms of time, and secondly,  I had to decide between responding to the wishes of the FH Joanneum or to those of the client, because the ideas of the two parties did not match.
I decided in favor of the customer, because what counts for me is not only a great product, also sustainability and that the customer and I are satisfied in the end is important and necessary.  Another realization is that the pandemic does not support our work as design students, because we weren‘t allowed to work in the workshop for a while.
